The serene hermitage of Rose and Bernard
May. 14th, 2009 04:06 pmIn "The Incident" (5x16), I thought Rose and Bernard's retreat was exceptionally beautiful in so many regards. Rose and Bernard have had three years together, three years which have been a pure gift. When the show started, she suffered from cancer, and after the 815 crash, she and Bernard were separated, and she feared him dead. From that point on, everything The Island has given to them has been a blessing. They even were re-united with Vincent!
Quite well-done, too was when Jack and Kate were trying to explain to them about Jack's "exalted mission." Their response was, "So what?" They both had achieved perfect peace and serenity. If they lived, or if they died, it was with understanding and resignation both. They had clearly put themselves into the hands of something higher, and certainly something more trustworthy than Jack's current plan.
Their fate, so far, was far better than I'd hoped for. And "old hippie Bernard" with the beard was so cute, too.
Other thoughts about the episode:
Their serenity also reinforced a view I've had for awhile: that you get from the Island what you bring to it. If you bring fear and discord, that's what you'll get. Bernard did experience that for awhile, with his aborted attempt to build the SOS sign.
The scene showed that for those who were willing to live truly *at peace* with the Island, peace and security *were* available. R & B didn't have any guns; weren't trying to "get back home" (after Bernard gave all that up); didn't have savior/messiah complexes.
When Bernard offered Juliet tea, they definitely shared a "moment." When she declined, I thought, "That was the *wrong* answer..."
